Pedego Electric Bikes Review

If you’ve looked up e-bikes in California, you’ve probably heard of Pedego. This electric bike manufacturer is ubiquitous in the US with hundreds of stores.

It grew from humble beginnings in 2007 to over 200 stores worldwide. The idea behind Pedego was to meet the demand for high-quality user-friendly e-bikes. Has Pedego succeeded in its ideals? Let’s find out.

A Cursory Look at Pedego eBikes

Pedego e-bikes was founded by Don DiCostanzo who felt that the market was lagging. DiCostanzo was unhappy with the lack of quality and decided to do something about it.

He was also frustrated with the lack of after-sales support by most manufacturers. This is the idea behind Pedego: to serve an underserved market.

Pedego strives to put the people first. The manufacturer cares about the end-user and empathizes with their pain points. Their motto reflects that “hello, fun…”

The enthusiast market heavily resonates with the ideals of Pedego. Today, the manufacturer has over 200 locations throughout the country.  It may well be the largest e-bike retailer in the country.

A major theme of Pedego stores is to revive brick-and-mortar stores. Pedego does have online stores for anyone shopping from home.

But their underlying premise is to allow buyers to walk into stores – just like in old times. Their stores are staffed by friendly employees who care about the end user.

For most people, walking into a retail shop feels like an intimidating experience. But Pedego stores have a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel at ease.

Their most popular entry is the Interceptor. It is an aggressive e-bike that serves as its flagship model. It has been around for over 14 years and hasn’t changed much since.

The Interceptor remains the go-to choice for enthusiasts. It is a flagship model of Pedego – with all the bells and whistles you want.

The aggressively named Interceptor is also aggressively priced. However, most riders are willing to look past the price point.

This goes to show you the trust that cyclists place in Pedego electric bikes. Pedego has over 20 different models of electric bikes in various categories.

These include:

  • Cruiser
  • Mountain
  • Commuter
  • Road

A major problem with Pedego electric bikes is their prices. Their electric bikes in California are some of the most expensive in the market.

Pedego does also provide cost-effective models for those on a limited budget. The excellent customer support team more than makes up for the price.

A Look at Pedego Components

Pedego electric bikes are available in a wide variety of choices. Most Pedego e-bikes are Class 2 e-bikes. This means they offer both throttle and pedal assistance.

The top speed with pedal assistance is 20 mph. You can buy Class 1 e-bikes that are available in pedal-assistance mode. A popular example of a Class 1 e-bike is the Elevate FS model.

Pedego e-bikes come with a 500W rear hub motor. They may also come with mid-drive motors. The torque output of these motors varies from 35Nm to 45Nm.

Some of the high-end models are capable of 90Nm torque. The power output of the motors is 500W with a peak output of 1000W and above.

The batteries are either 48V or 36V with 15Ah or 10Ah. You can also choose the battery you want the bike to come with. This is a big plus.

These bikes are capable of covering 30 miles to 80 miles on a single charge. But you can choose the correct battery depending on your preferences.

Pedego also provides its e-bikes with LED displays to keep track of performance metrics. These e-bikes come with a USB charging port to keep your devices charged.

Frame Design

The frames feature an eye-catching design that is bound to woo crowds. This probably explains why they charge this much.

Pedego uses steel forks with aluminum frames for cost efficiency and to balance out the weight. This combination also creates the most durable e-bike with a comfortable ride.

These e-bikes usually feature oversize tubes for extra durability. The tube allows the e-bikes to carry maximum payloads.

You Can also choose models with a step-thru or a step-over frame. There are folding frames available for those who want commuter e-bikes.

Components

Nearly all Pedego e-bikes are multi-gear models with Shimano components. Budget models offer up to 7 gears. But the best models come with 11 gears.

For example, the Elevate full suspension e-bike boasts 11 gears. This makes it easy to climb and ride all kinds of terrains.

A popular e-bike is the Conveyor model. It comes with a belt drive and an internal gear hub. This allows the e-bike to have zero requirements regarding maintenance.

All Pedego e-bikes come with powerful hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes. They provide the e-bike with powerful stopping performance regardless of the terrain.

You can also buy helpful accessories to make your ride more comfortable. These accessories include chain guards, fenders, lights, racks, kickstands, etc.

Pedego Boomerang

Specs that matter

  • Motor: 500W hub motor
  • Torque: 45Nm
  • Batteries: 48V 10Ah Samsung
  • Top speed: 20 mph
  • Brake: 180mm disc
  • Weight: 62 pounds

The Boomerang is available in two trims: Plus and Platinum. These bikes are available in a 24” or 26” frame.

The 24’ model comes in three colors: red, white, and teal. The 26” model comes in black, green, and blue-green.

Cyclists who buy the 26” frame can upgrade to magnesium wheels. This improves the bike’s offroad performance.

The Platinum edition of the e-bike also comes with a front air suspension. There is a 10-speed gearbox, torque sensor, and an improved seat post.

Given all these upgrades, the Platinum Edition can cost a hefty $5000. The cheapest version of the Boomerang costs $3000. That is a lot of money for an e-bike.

The Boomerang is meant to be driven on paved trails. It is designed for use in urban environments.

The seating and ergonomic handlebars will keep you comfortable for hours on end. It can manage a top speed of 20mph. At this price point, we were hoping it could do 30 mph.

Pedego City Commuter

Specs that matter

  • Motor: 500W motor
  • Suspension: 40mm
  • Batteries: 10Ah or 15Ah, 48V
  • Top speed: 20 mph
  • Brake: Mechanical disc brakes
  • Weight: 52 pounds

The Pedego City Commuter electric bike is underpriced. It comes in three frame sizes and five different colors. The average weight of the bike is 52 pounds.
This is made possible due to the 6061-T6 aluminum alloy build. This computer model can do well over 60 miles on a single charge.

A Samsung 720Wh battery allows the e-bike to add more miles. A 500W gear hub motor has a decent torque of 45Nm.

There isn’t much in this e-bike in terms of suspension. The 40mm suspension post will reduce shock and bounce on bumpy roads.

The drivetrain is protected by a chain guard and full-length steel fenders. A rapid 7-speed gear shifting helps you maintain your cadence.

The City Commuter comes with Star Union hydraulic disc brakes. This is a major upgrade over previous models. The large 180mm brakes provide ample stopping power.

Pedego advertises this model as an all-in-one e-bike that can do it all. It has a tail light, headlight, leather grips, integrated bell, and various features.

If you want a premium e-bike at an affordable price, buy the Commuter.

Pedego Comfort Cruiser

Specs that matter

  • Motor: Rear-Mounted Geared Hub 500W
  • Suspension: None
  • Batteries: 36V, 48V and 10Ah, 15Ah
  • Top speed: 20 mph
  • Brake: Mechanical disc brakes
  • Weight: 52 pounds

If you are in the market for an all-rounder e-bike, choose the Pedego Comfort Cruiser. It is available at an affordable price with all the features you need.

There are a few disadvantages to the e-bike. However, they are to be expected at this price point.

The e-bike is available with a step-over and step-thru frame. It comes with a rear hub 500W motor that allows both throttle and pedal assist.

There is enough power to help you scale up hills with ease. Buyers can choose from two batteries: 48V 10Ah or 15A.

This e-bike has a range of 45 miles on a single charge. The comfort cruiser is not very fast due to the motor. It can crank up the speed to 20 mph.

If you are looking for more speed, this is not the e-bike for you. The lithium-ion battery is a good plus point, however.

The Comfort Cruiser comes with fairly basic safety features. There is a rear light and a front bike reflector. At this price point, we are not complaining.

A bell is on the left side and an integrated motor cut-off switch. The wires are appropriately arranged to prevent them from getting tangled.

Overall, the Comfort Cruiser is a  great option if you are on a budget. But don’t expect it to break any speed or range record for e-bikes.

Pedego Conveyor

Specs that matter

  • Motor: Brose 250W 90Nm mid-drive
  • Suspension: Rigid
  • Batteries: 468Wh
  • Top speed: 20 mph
  • Brake: Tektro M285 hydraulic disc with 180mm rotors
  • Weight: 54 pounds

Powered by a Brose S mid-drive motor, this e-bike makes everyday riding smooth and comfortable. The maximum torque output for this e-bike is about 90Nm.

A high-quality Shimano drivetrain provides gearing for unparalleled off-road cycling. At this price point, finding a better e-bike in California is complicated.

Pedego manages to cap the max weight of the e-bike at 55 pounds. The frame of this e-bike is relatively heavy.

This allows the e-bike to cover a range of 45 miles on a single charge. The powerful hydraulic brakes (courtesy of Tektro) provide fantastic stopping power.

It would be easy to bring this e-bike to a grinding halt at top speeds. Other notable features include an integrated front, backlighting for the battery, and mud flaps.

Pedego has provided various accessories to make the ride more comfortable.  Given all these features, it is safe to assume that the Conveyor is a must-have.

The price for this e-bike is on the higher end of the spectrum. That is a significant drawback.

Pedego Interceptor

Specs that matter

  • Motor: 48 V Brushless Rear Geared Hub Motor, 45 Nm Torque
  • Suspension: Rigid
  • Batteries: Samsung Lithium Battery, 48 V / 15Ah
  • Top speed: 20 mph
  • Brake: Shimano mechanical disc with 180mm rotors
  • Weight: 55 pounds

Our review of Pedego e-bikes would not be complete without mentioning the Interceptor. It is the flagship model of Pedego e-bikes.

If you are in the market for the best cruiser bike, check out the Interceptor. Despite all its trinkets, this e-bike weighs in at just 55 pounds.

This is made possible by the 6061 aluminum frame. Perhaps more importantly, the e-bike can cover 60 miles on a single charge.

This is because of the long-lasting battery and gear-rubbed motor. The drivetrain makes this e-bike ideal for off-road riding.
The powerful mechanical brakes provide superior stopping power at high speeds. This makes the Intercept a safe choice for traveling at high speeds.

We were a little disappointed with the top speed. This e-bike has a maximum speed of 20 mph. So if you want more speed, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

This cruiser is available in 17 different colors and different frame styles. Pedego wanted to make their cruiser as customizable as possible for the general crowd.
